Its hard to say. But she says she occasionally received packages at her dorm room containing objects she suspected had come from her mother, such as a bracelet with an inscription about finding the truth, or others close to her, such as a pair of sneakers, which she believed Lovelace, who had sometimes helped her stretch before workouts, had sent. And if those things are true, and youre also struggling in poverty, then something is deeply wrong with the system. RG: Mhmm. If you speak, Im going to disconnect you from the call. Seeing other students consult their parents for minor decisions made her feel left out; she avoided telling people she had been in foster care before college. So one question was: Are you from a low-income family? [24], In a statement to The Daily Pennsylvanian, the university said the New Yorker article "did not accurately reflect" the university's investigation of the issues raised by the Rhodes Trust. I have all these three kinds of different rationale and corroborations. At the end of the march they were addressed by Fierceton and other FGLI students. Penn's Office of Student Conduct recommended withholding her master's degree until she paid a fine; both conditions were dropped but a notation about the investigative finding remains in her transcript. But those definitions arent anywhere to be found. I think youre right. "You can't couch-surf in a pandemic", Norton said. RG: or in graduate school. She helped SP2 assistant professor Toorjo Ghose draft and promote a petition in support of Police Free Penn, an activist group calling on the university to cut its ties with the Philadelphia Police Department over its poor relations with the largely black and Latin residents of the West Philadelphia neighborhoods around the university's campus, and rethink its own police department, the largest private one in the state. And its no offense its not like the most profound . As a result she withdrew from the Rhodes Scholarship; a sympathetic Penn faculty member has paid her Oxford tuition in its stead.[2]. And then theres also foster siblings in the sense of other people who are in the foster care system who youre living with. She, about 10 years ago, she wrote a comment I think on a Gawker post or something like that that we ended up then re-publishing as an essay at The Huffington Post about, and it was about her life in poverty, and it went viral, millions of people read it, extremely well-written piece. The university's police did not know at first where the building was and the city's paramedics did not know how to get to it. To me, it seems like any reader of the English language would read that in a literary sense , RG: of its self-exploration, self-doubt, trauma. She wasn't poor and grew up in a wealthy household with a successful mother. box, it's like you have to fit yourself in, saying: Are you the first in your family to attend? [2], Morrison, no longer employed by St. Luke's, then began the process of trying to restore her reputation by having all references to it removed from the public record. And I think said something along the lines of there were things missing and it was distorted. And its mentioned briefly. "[25], "I cannot avoid the sense that Mackenzie is being faulted for not having suffered enough", Norton told The New Yorker. And I dont remember all of the questions, but it was a really intense, rapid fire of really difficult and challenging questions. In her reading, Tracy came across an article that congratulated Mackenzie Fierceton, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, on being named a Rhodes Scholar. Like what does Penn say when you tell them: Hey, the Penn official who helped me fill this out said that these are the categories that I fit. I think they do have a richer experience if they have more diversity around them, but that is more the point. And I think its true. RG: And The New Yorker article also alluded to a few things that you had gotten loose with in a couple of paragraphs. Within a year of her arrest, another St. Louis-area hospital had granted her admitting privileges, and she was able to resume her medical career. Fierceton responded that that showed the university's "vulnerability and desperation". [2] She was also working two jobs, as a policy fellow with Philadelphia City Council and another interning in social work at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The notation in her transcript remains. You have a good education and youre clearly smart. MF: But yeah, that, I guess, just one point of clarification that I recently, in the last few months, just found out about. That was my personal statement. She added the additional detail that at the time of her first hospitalization, Fierceton had just failed her first AP Chemistry test. verbally. Then, the first-generation box. [2], In December 2021 Fierceton retained another lawyer pro bono and filed her own suit against Penn, alleging that the university's investigations into her history and how she had represented herself was a "sham", undertaken with the intent of forcing her to withdraw from the Rhodes Scholarship and damaging her credibility as a witness in the Driver suit, constituting tortious interference with a business relationship and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. [2], Some of those Morrison talked with did believe her; a classmate of Fierceton's recalled people likening her to the protagonist of the film Gone Girl, about a Missouri woman who disappears in order to avenge herself on an adulterous husband, whom she makes it appear killed her. She entered foster care only at the age of 17, after making a complaint of abuse against Dr. Morrison a complaint that a court later found not to be credible. And we do know for sure that she was in touch with the university. I have some of my own theories, but I want to hear yours. "I really don't have words,'" she told a mentor at the Penn Women's Center. [Laughs.] Like questioning: How much blood? Because Im not under any illusion that Im the typical foster kid. I think there were almost 30 of those letters again, very similar to who had given statements in the past to corroborate my abuse as well as leaders in the FGLI community saying yes, we started this community. When I came to Penn and saw all of these students who were living that life, there was a sense of community and solidarity amongst us, which was very powerful for me because I just felt so out of place. MF: Yeah, it was, things like that where I simplified all of these foster kids that youre living with a biological family who have kids, which I would say are foster siblings. And so I wanted to start with where things really started to unravel for you. Im curious, having dealt with so many people along the way, who are questioning your story, how do you feel like the boxes play into this? Yeah. Another program official that year recalls Fierceton as seeming more vulnerable than she let on; after picking her up from the hospital following bone surgery that year, she noticed that Fierceton had a very light winter coat and few other possessions. [3] In high school there, Fierceton was a model student. Anything interesting in that that you noticed? [1]:111112, In her Intercept interview, Grim recounts how this was reported in The New Yorker and asks "So how is a person who is filling out this application supposed to know what definition youre supposed to use?" RG: Penn didnt respond to a request for comment, but in its response to Mackenzies lawsuit, they write: Penn denies that there are accessibility problems with the Caster Building which contributed to Mackenzies medical emergency or to [Cameron] Drivers death. as a kid. So those questions came like later on and were really a part of the initial interrogation. But I guess I cant say for sure. This could happen to me. Uh, my lawyer. Now anyone who earns that distinction is to be commended, but the article also noted that Mackenzie had aged out of foster care . So I was like: OK, fine. And if you havent already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. So I kind of simplified that in a sentence to make my point of what I wanted to study, which was the foster-care-to-prison pipeline, which is also what I ultimately ended up doing my Ph.D. on and what I just started this year. ")[3], The OSC report also concluded that nothing in her academic record warranted the revocation of either degree. A graduate student named Mackenzie Fierceton was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship by the University of Pennsylvania in 2020 only to have it stripped from her a few months later after allegations. The University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday announced it will stop withholding a master's degree from Mackenzie Fierceton, the former student at the center of a recent New Yorker magazine. And so was it later, in a different conversation where they asked about the line in the essay about not being able to recognize yourself or is there some illusion to that in the transcript that you found? Its practically half of Americans, or more. And thats actually one of the things that, if there was any doubt whatsoever about this story, in some ways it was settled by that. And then the focus shifted to the second box. While the investigators understood, they also wrote that the limited information she provided may have been more likely to elicit an answer favorable to her. And you saw that playing out right away, right, when your biological mother was first arrested? And then theres the part that felt like: I have no idea whats going to convince these people if I gave them medical records, I gave them forensic photos of me taken in the hospital, I gave them again like corroboration from professors of like how I described myself, from leaders in the FIGLY community. Her admission to Oxford was unaffected, and she began her graduate studies in sociology there later in the year, with a Penn professor covering her tuition. And then the other question was: Are you the first in your family to attend college? And we spoke for a long time and I went through everything I had found. The mother of a friend of Fierceton's recalls that when she told Morrison on the phone that she "was not interested" in hearing what Morrison had to say, she got angry and confrontational. The university, in its response to Mackenzies lawsuit, referred to Mackenzies mother as an accomplished physician and claimed that a court had found her allegations not to be credible. It finds the definition the university's office uses, without that language, as being more determinative; Penn First, the FGLI student organization Fierceton had been involved with, also used that definition on its website for most of the time she was an undergraduate. When they did, they were unable to get stretchers or backboards down Caster's stairways or elevators as there was insufficient space. And I dont remember exactly what their statement was, but they disputed it. [2], Morrison's arrest had been reported in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,[6] where commenters on the online version of the story took her side, speculating that Fierceton was "an entitled brat" who had vengefully fabricated charges that had the potential to end her mother's medical career. So how is a person who is filling out this application supposed to know what definition youre supposed to use? Fierceton considered dropping out, but "if I truly can't do this, where am I supposed to return to? Betsy Reed is The Intercepts editor in chief. And you experienced that yourself, right? Her last set of foster parents had had a baby and she felt less a part of their lives. So they didnt ask about that in this meeting. [2] Winkelstein, who has a Ph.D. in bioengineering and has studied injuries,[3] then proceeded to interrogate Fierceton at length about her abuse and hospitalization, in a manner that led Fierceton to believe that not only did Winkelstein doubt her story but had spoken with Morrison. Attached were copies of the Missouri court orders expunging Morrison's arrest and removing her name from the DSS registry. [10], Fierceton, who outside of school had also taken on a volunteer position as a birthing doula, decided during that summer to apply for a Rhodes Scholarship to get a Ph.D. at Oxford University in England, encouraged by a classmate who had just won one himself and was impressed by her activism. [2], Fierceton was accepted at the University of Pennsylvania (commonly known as Penn) on a full scholarship, arranged through QuestBridge. ", When Penn's Office of Student Conduct confronted Fierceton with the discrepancy between her statement on two of her applications that she ", The exact definition of FGLI relevant to forms Fierceton filled out is a key point in the Rhodes Trust and Penn investigations of her. Some people were very much on my side; some people were very much, I think, in that sort of cognitive dissonance of: This cant be true because if it can, then Im in danger. ", "Inside Mackenzie Fierceton's ongoing legal battle with the University", "Mackenzie Fierceton Sets the Record Straight on Losing a Rhodes Scholarship Over Accusations of 'Dishonesty', "Penn community rallies in support of former Rhodes Scholar Mackenzie Fierceton", "Universities must stop fetishizing trauma", https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mackenzie_Fierceton&oldid=1138496124, controversy over representation of childhood and abuse, This page was last edited on 10 February 2023, at 00:35. Have you ever heard of her case? And I was the one who uncovered my classmates death. Penn student and Rhodes Scholarship recipient Mackenzie Fierceton filed a lawsuit against the University following its investigation into allegations that questioned her status as a first-generation, low-income student and survivor of abuse.. MF: Just a quick circling back, Im actually not sure if it was her who first reached out or if it was General Counsel Wendy White, because I later found out that they had a phone call about 36 hours after the article came out and seemed to talk pretty extensively, and then there were a lot of emails that happened. [14], The publicity led 150 Penn students to stage a walkout from classes to demonstrate in support of Fierceton. [Laughs.]. You know, in my personal experience, there were not very many kids who came from a background like me. And it became pretty clear to me that there had been a very similar delay in his care, but even worse dynamics. "She has become emboldened over time, and has been successful with her evolving tale for 6 yrs. And theyll openly talk about this. A former teacher in elementary school recalled that in one of those calls, Morrison made a reference to an earlier discussion of Fierceton's mental illness; the teacher did not remember any such conversation. Because thats not how we understand poverty. MF: I think youre right. The New Yorker reported that Fierceton reported this to Penn's campus police, fearing that her mother had somehow found out where she was living. And whats the difference between the U.S. and English system? Fierceton was mentioned in the complaint as having experienced similar issues following her seizure; she was deposed in the suit in March 2021, the month before the university's investigation led her to withdraw from the Rhodes Scholarship. So the Rhodes Trust ended up after their quote-investigation, and I submitted all the evidence, they ended up still recommending that my scholarship be rescinded, uh, but I had another opportunity to respond to their report, which I absolutely wanted to do. And so the fact that shes continued pursuing you to me kind of demonstrates the entire case. You have a good education and youre clearly smart. She told them she felt that would be more likely to get an unbiased answer that way. Like, it seemed like an airtight case from my perspective. [c] Chewing was difficult as well, and she had a feeding tube inserted. And Im kind of one of the lucky ones where I had really expansive and thorough documentation for all the parts of this story. And she quickly got interest of a book deal because she was obviously such a great writer. And she had gone to a private school growing up. And youre getting instruction from a university official that thats how youre supposed to fill it out, thats what the definition says online. You know, I believe the first people who said that was the Rhodes Trust. Like one of them was describing a biological child in a house as another foster child, and something about a half-brother or something. What were those and how were those errors kind of deployed against you? Like, they want to curate a diverse experience for their well-off students, so that they can say that they had this diverse experience in college . She bounced from one foster home to the next. [2], Fierceton supplied the trust's investigators with her medical and court records from the mid-2010s as well as letters from 26 peopleteachers at Whitfield, the three Penn faculty members who had written her Rhodes recommendation letters, vouching for her abuse claims and saying she had never misrepresented herself. In The New Yorker article, one teacher had written: She showed up at my classroom door with a bloodied and battered face and then fainted., RG: And then, Rachel Aviv, the reporter also quotes Sherry McClain, who was a nurse who was assigned to you, she said: She had two black eyes, and her hair was full of blood. And so youre becoming rather inconvenient to the university at that point , I would assume, which plays into the way that universities and elite structures think of diversity, I think. Those investigations revealed that for the first 17 years of her life, Fierceton was raised by her mother, Dr. Carrie Morrison, an accomplished physician. The department of social services substantiated Mackenzies allegations, as did the Missouri Child Abuse and Neglect Review Board, which is an independent state panel. [5] Lovelace was also arrested and charged with sexual abuse. And, in this case, almost everyone who was involved in the university administration are upper middle class or very wealthy, highly academically educated white women. And there was also the added threat that they would report me to the federal government for wire fraud if I didnt, again, withdraw from the Rhodes and sign this NDA. Its virtually almost an unknown phenomena or to people who are working in the field, its certainly known, but theres been very little research on it, which partially complicates my Ph.D., because theres so little to draw upon. "[2], Near the end of November Fierceton was named one of 32 Rhodes scholars from the U.S. for the year. She shared with the former screenshots of online chats and printouts of emails with representatives of the, The Rhodes Trust report found that the Penn police had no records of any calls to them from Fierceton about this. And I also think we have this racist and classist notion of who can be an abuser or who can cause harm. [22], In the New Yorker article, Fierceton and others criticized Penn for its use of not only her story but another recent FGLI Rhodes awardee as poverty porn, suggesting the university had turned on her when it learned she had actually come from a privileged, affluent background and thus did not fit the narrative of having grown up in foster care recounted in its news release and the accompanying Inquirer article. At Norton's request, a fellow political science colleague, Rogers Smith, who while at Yale had chaired that university's undergraduate disciplinary committee, agreed to represent Fierceton during what he called "a very unusual process". Thats not in question. And its striking to see just the continuing to push of what happened. Why would I do that? But yeah, that, I guess, just one point of clarification that I recently, in the last few months, just found out about. who was, I believe now, the acting provost. Was there abuse before this? Cause Ive just wanted to go on with my life and, you know, live it. She kept a journal, writing that she was in so much pain from her bruised ribs that she could barely breathe. [9] In a news release, Penn's then-president Amy Gutmann, a daughter of Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany who had herself been the first in her family to attend college,[11] spoke admiringly of Fierceton as "a first-generation low-income student and a former foster youth. MF: Yeah. And with that, like you said, notion of: Well, theres no way that you went to private school and all of this could have still happened, or that you could be low-income now and this idea that socioeconomic status is permanent. And we cant acknowledge that, so we then have to pick apart the other pieces of it, and say that well this, this just cant be real. Yeah, it was, things like that where I simplified all of these foster kids that youre living with a biological family who have kids, which I would say are foster siblings. And because poverty and abuse are so pervasive in society and particularly in a country that has such a minimal social safety net and has so much violence. [1] It appended both the Rhodes report and OSC's as exhibits. MF: Yes, definitely. MF: So to me it was pretty clear that it likely came from them. Fierceton grew up in a wealthy community and attended an elite private school in a St. Louis suburb. You had mentioned that you actually made a transcript of your interview with Deputy Provost Finkelstein shortly after the conversation. We dont have ads, so we depend on our members 35,000 and counting to help us hold the powerful to account. Jay Caspian Kang sounded similar themes in two different New York Times newsletters discussing Fierceton's story. Fierceton says she had not failed any tests; her Whitfield transcript shows she got a B+ in the class. [2], Classmates who told Fierceton this also noted the similarities to another medical emergency in September 2018, when a 38-year-old SP2 graduate named Cameron Driver had suffered a cardiac event during a class in Caster's basement. And so that was when it really transitioned, the second half of it, into these really intimate questions about my abuse until the point where I was sobbing and couldnt answer the questions anymore. And because you were not just low-income, actually no income, other than the jobs that you were working nobody has complained about the low-income one, right? 207 1,590 6,062 Show this thread Mackenzie Fierceton @MFierceton Aug 8 Will never not make my day to see this on the shelf. MF: So those questions really came later. If youd like to support our work, go to theintercept.com/give your donation, no matter what the amount, makes a real difference. So that was, I think later on that specific line came into question. And to me, Im like I am a household of one, so I am the only person in my family. I reached out for a response to the University of Pennsylvania and also Provost Beth Winkelstein and General Counsel Wendy White for a response, as well as to Mackenzies biological mother. Or whatever our kind of contemporary version of it is. If you havent read the story yet, I highly recommend pausing this, and giving it a read first, because I try not to go over too much of the same territory in my interview with her. And MacKenzie is the only one whos allowed to answer these questions. [2], During her high school years, Fierceton has alleged that her mother subjected her to emotional and physical abuse, the latter enough on more than one occasion to require hospitalization. Penn didnt respond to a request for comment, but in its response to Mackenzies lawsuit, they write: Penn denies that there are accessibility problems with the Caster Building which contributed to Mackenzies medical emergency or to [Cameron] Drivers death. And she ended up responding right away, and asked to get on a phone call. ", However, in its report, Penn notes that Fierceton had, in an essay (which it allows may not have actually been submitted) for her application for a travel, The Rhodes report acknowledged her documentation of an email she wrote to a reporter at the, Penn's investigation noted that even if Fierceton had been referring to the Chesterfield police rather than the. "[27], For the Penn investigation, Fierceton relied on the definition on the webpage for Penn First Plus, the university's support program for FGLI students, which includes the language about the student having a "strained or limited relationship" with the graduate parent. The article by reporter Rachel Aviv was called How an Ivy League School Turned Against a Student, and it tells the story of an extraordinary battle between Mackenzie and the University of Pennsylvania. There, she wandered the hallways until she found the history teacher, and collapsed. "She was a foster child, but not for long enough. A University of Pennsylvania May graduate who is currently completing her master's degree at Penn has been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship for graduate study at the University of Oxford.. Penn's 2021 Rhodes Scholar is Mackenzie Fierceton from St. Louis, currently residing in Philadelphia. The nurse also reported bruises all over Fierceton's body, in different stages of healing, considered an indicator of possible physical abuse. Like you said, theres also the cultural stereotype of like Orphan Annie and Oliver Twist of what these kinds of kids are supposed to look like that starts so early on in, and deep in the culture or media that we encounter that I think really ingrains that into people. I want to read from The New Yorker article again, it says: The Web site of Penn First Plus, a university program founded in 2018 to support F.G.L.I. Cause then you cant think that it could be you. And they released this quote-unquote report in April of 2021 with their findings. RG: Thats been my understanding of it. She had wanted to appeal the Rhodes committee's findings, but Rafaelle advised her that Penn had hinted to him that it might consider referring the matter to federal prosecutors on the grounds that she had lied about being FGLI on her Free Application for Federal Student Aid form. My understanding is there were two anonymous emails. She had had a fairly upper middle class life yet was working at multiple fast food restaurants and barely getting by. And that dynamic, I would say, [laughs] probably played a big part in all of this. "[2], On her application, Fierceton recounted her background and the unexpected way it led to her becoming a foster child. She considered the advantages and disadvantages of reporting her mother, but ultimately feared she might not even be believed, as her mother would tell people she was mentally ill or lying. But it doesnt mean you were always low-income, just that you are now. She was an independent student when she applied. Then the University of Pennsylvania accused her of. And how much confidence do you have that that anonymous complainer was Carrie, your biological mother. And the staff member saying like: I understand, can you please give Mackenzie an estimate of how many questions are left? And what area of it are you going to explore with your Ph.D.? [3], Before that happened, Fierceton withdrew from the scholarship on her own. I cant remember if it was in the Rhodes essay or in another essay that, in hindsight, you wouldve tightened up. Thats all it takes to support the journalism you rely on. And now they have to face the fact that someone who looks like them, who shares all these identities with them, could be the source of all of this harm. And if you havent already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. Fierceton said that when she had applied to SP2 as a sophomore she had cleared it with the school's associate director of admissions, who told her that a student's biological parents were not relevant to that definition, and said the same thing in 2020 (Penn's OSC interviewed the associate director and SP2's associate director for financial aid whom Fierceton said she had a similar conversation with; neither remembered speaking with Fierceton about the issue)[1]:111112). And I turned over all this information to his widow. RG: Like questioning: How much blood? [2], A week later, Fierceton received an email asking her to attend a meeting over Zoom with Winkelstein. RG: So you applied for your masters in social work and there was a question of whether to check the, what Ive learned is called the FGLI box: first-generation, low-income. Because that was one of the ones that really blew my mind. I think they have said, well, theres different definitions and the dean who is the dean of the grad school said: Well, thats not our definition. [2], Morrison retained William Margulis, a former member of Whitfield's board who had sent four of his children there, including one of her daughter's classmates, as her attorney. Her mentor told Licht afterwards that "it felt like an attack on a student" and that she had never experienced anything like it. And then theres also foster siblings in the sense of other people who are in the foster care system who youre living with. And then again there was trouble getting him out of the basement. And I think psychologically one way people feel safer about it is to say: No, that happens to other people. MF: verbally. She, to my knowledge, has stuck by that. And when I asked her again when I was gathering all this evidence in 2020, she gave me the same answer of: I dont believe its relevant, and this box isnt relevant to admission. What was the response from the readers of the paper? There were definitely, Im sure. And then very quickly turn to very specific questions about different instances of abuse.
