Legacy:The big Legacy element of this Chapter was the introduction of the Otherworlds, and to be honest, they were overwhelming. The core gameplay features are all the same, and while some changes to rules do iron out issues found in Betrayal, each game is largely a similar experience. And, since Betrayal Legacy is a overlord-style co-op, I also decided to chronicle how its co-op play changes over time, as a complement to my work inMeeples Together. We all knew it would be bad, but we all had different reactions to it. This can be for attack, defense, an Event card or a Haunt roll. To be fair Im a fan of Betrayal at the House on the Hill so Ive a bit of a leg up on this one. We now need to discover which one is the cult leader (step i) before killing them (step ii). No, we still dont know what this means, but were told the next Chapter will be Part II of the game. Chapter Four: 1797 The Haunted Furniture The ghosts increasingly haunting the house possess the furniture this session, and we have to burn it in a fire before it kills us. The Bloodied Room was a rarity that we really remembered every time it returned, but most of the ghosts and scares just faded away into a deck of ghosts and scares, thus denying us their Legacy. There just wasnt enough Legacy at the start: it took until our fourth game for us to feel like a Legacy item was effective and to get elements like the helm and the changing house. Theres lots of good lines in those movies to chant. But the mechanic that gave us the ability to walk through a hole in space to find new dimensions, items, and curses was a really great jump. There is still some strategic play, with several players running around and smashing so that a final player can INVOKE to close the portal, but its still a big step down from Chapters Two and Three, which had multi-stage strategic cooperation that we thought would be the new normal for the game, but which has largely disappeared in the games since. This immediately led us to an outcome-based Legacy that was more meaningful than the cards that weve been adding to the deck based on previous results:the Guest Room where our killing occurred got replaced with a Bloody Room. To be fair we knew something bad was going to happen to whoever used the Helm; that was obvious. That stickered-over tile, The Chasm, is an entrance to the Otherworlds, which appear as 28 new cards that we add to our box. We never managed to get the third check on any of the other weapons. There's an overarching narrative throughout the entire campaign, and many of the pieces added to the story are discovered based on how games end. In fact when were down to our last piece of furniture, its increasingly obvious were going to win, which is never a great thing a round out in a co-op game. There we go. However, it looks to me like they are all just flavor text and nothing changes for any of them. Part of that was learning the story elements that will return in future games, including the rooms that make up the house (and its grounds), as well as items. Playing the same board game with the same group of players over a dozen times doesn't sound like the best way to spend multiple nights, but the way Betrayal Legacy shifts and changes after each playthrough made every game feel fresh and unique. Honestly, were still not thrilled: this second Haunt is so basic. Overall, we have a good time early in this game, again because of the increased length of the early game, but the fight-focused Haunt feels a bit rudimentary. This game, we actually dont initiate the Haunt until the fourth omen symbol comes up, and that means that weve mapped out a large number of rooms. Sadly, its again pretty rudimentary cooperation. Each miniature has two different 'characters' attached to it, such as the Scientist doubling as a Preacher Man. Also that they let the first person to die know that there wasnt a witch just in case people were confused was so nice. Betrayal Legacy Ending Questions (Spoilers included) One more warning, this post will contain massive spoilers for anyone who hasn't completed the campaign. This level of complexity is nice because it increases the possibilities for strategic play, allowing for some asymmetric cooperation. Lost travelers with too much to lose. We did encounter a few rules snags while playing, but if you just go with the story and as a group decide on what sounds the most fun and fair way to figure out the problem, you'll be fine. Simultaneously, there's the second overarching story of the family legacy of the players, who alter the house and its contents along the way. Certainly, the addition of any new rules system is to a Legacy games benefit and the addition of new places to explore even moreso. One of my favorite Legacy games is Betrayal Legacy. Betrayal Legacy is now available wherever board games are sold. Its a good model for teaching a game in parts, but the danger is that you start off with a game thats too simple and so doesnt interest players. So, we select for items and against omens, under the theory that its 80% likely to benefit each of us.
